L.A. Fashion Week Spring '04: Imitation of Christ

If it was possible to create a moment of peace in an otherwise hectic fashion week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Tara Subkoff achieved it. The designer showed her Imitation of Christ collection on Oct. 30 in a grass-filled tent, complete with a guitarist and flutist playing John Lennon tunes as models holding doves and ribbon streamers rounded a maypole.

The show, which lasted less than five minutes, left the audience feeling both enamored of the presentation and cheated by its short length. But an Imitation of Christ fashion show has never been conventional—past shows have included a mock funeral, a mock movie premiere and a mock auction at Sotheby’s in New York.

“This was my Renaissance pagan fantasy,” said Subkoff. “I just wanted to do something that’s really positive. With everything that’s been going on in the world, I thought it’s appropriate. I wanted to do something beautiful— just really ethereal, really beautiful and simple.”

Subkoff showed classic, elegant ’30s-style pieces with clean, simple lines and a modern, timeless feel. Looks included dresses, tops and skirts, shirts and shorts, and jacket and short combinations in white, peach, gray, pink, light blue and black silk and cotton fabrics. —N.J.S.
