Fashion District Gets Award, New Marketing Executive

The Los Angeles Fashion District has named Katherine Schmidt as its new marketing coordinator. Schmidt replaces April Elgas, who left the organization recently to pursue graduate studies.

Schmidt previously was the marketing coordinator for Village Homes, a Denver, Colo.–based home builder. She graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in studio art.

She will be responsible for all marketing and promotional activities relating to the Fashion District business improvement district and will report to Executive Director Kent Smith.

“We are very excited to have Katherine on our team,” said Smith. “She brings with her a great deal of graphics and destination- marketing experience, as well as abundant enthusiasm.”

Schmidt is joining the team that recently received a Crystal Eagle award for excellence in marketing from the California Downtown Association.

The district was noted for its Web site, www.fashiondistrict.org, and its online searchable business directory, which provides wholesale buyers and retail shoppers with sources for their purchases.

The Web site experienced a 780 percent increase in traffic in 2002 and a 487 percent increase during the first quarter of this year. The number of first-time site users has increased 65 percent, according to the district. —Robert McAllister
