Tag Rag

Fashion works in cycles. Sometimes brands do, too. Tag Rag began by branding itself with its logo prominently placed on its young contemporary sportswear line. Then it went through a low-key phase, and the logos disappeared. A year ago, they came back—with a vengeance. “We’re emphasizing our brand recognition,” said co-owner Orly Dahan, adding that the music industry has helped branded apparel usurp private-label clothing.

The 13-year-old company leased space in the Gerry Building about four months ago. The showroom is well stocked with vibrant, youthful fashions that show influences ranging from athletic to punk.

Tag Rag is also collection-driven rather than item-driven. Sales presentations revolve around entire themes, with multiple outfits shown in a variety of colors—and almost always marked with the Tag Rag name.

“There are different ways to do it,” Dahan said of designing logos on clothing. “But the brand needs to be visible.” —Christian M. Chensvold
