Puma Lands in San Diego

Hot athletic brand Puma is opening a store in San Diego’s hip Gaslamp Quarter district.

Puma North America signed a 10-year lease valued at $1.9 million for a building off Fifth Avenue in the new Gaslamp City Square, according to Burnham Real Estate Services.

Next May, the apparel-andfootwear manufacturer and retailer will open a 4,000-square-foot store in the center, which is part of a 42,000-square-foot mixed-use development currently under construction. Gaslamp City Square will incorporate retail and commercial space and 120 luxury apartments.

The store will be Puma’s first in San Diego. The German company has experienced a resurgence thanks to young women’s growing interest in the brand and its strong athletic roots. Puma’s apparel sales increased more than 60 percent in the second quarter, breaking company records.

Company executives said San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter will be a perfect match for its customers, since the area receives heavy traffic from younger shoppers. —Robert McAllister
