L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: MartinMartin

Eric Martin and Diane Moss-Martin further explored the yin and yang of fashion and its clash with the cultures of the current world for the MartinMartin Fall collection, shown April 1 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

The Martins’ designs tend to be minimalist but convey the complex thought process behind the creation of each collection. This season, the husband-and-wife design team presented a “Victorian Punk” theme, mixing the romantic fundamentals of the Victorian era with punk’s “anti-style.” The designers showed their signature draped silhouettes in blackand- white with oversize shirts, loose pants, raw edges, crinkling, and tucked and pinned constructions.

Highlights included overlapping leather jackets, loosely tailored poplin shirts, draped viscose dresses, wool jerseys, and tattered tops and dresses. Colorations echoed the mostly natural materials used, consisting mainly of black, white, ecru, bordeaux, steel blue and charcoal. —Robert McAllister
