L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Sue Wong

Sue Wong found inspiration from flamenco dancers, flappers and Saharan queens for her Fall 2004 collection, which bowed on March 31 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. The crowd received her fantastic voyage with a hearty show of approval punctuated by a standing ovation.

The audience embraced the exoticism of Wong’s gowns and evening separates, which included the black silk embroidered waistcoat and slim pants of a Moroccan-inspired pantsuit and bolero gowns with highly romantic hand-embroidered Spanish flowers.

Wong summoned a jazz-age daring through a chemise dress with dazzling emerald beads and a silk charmeuse halter dress with a cascade-ruffle skirt and jet-tassel trim.

The end of the show featured a nod to the future with a patchwork pin-striped coat and a black nude-lace bustier gown with a dramatic train. Like any great drama, the show concluded with a wedding—and an ivory floral halter wedding gown.

“It’s about romance,” Wong said of the 2004 collection. “They appeal to the fantasy element in women.” —A.A.
