L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Tomer

Texas native Tomer Gender used functionality, fit and style as the foundation of his menswear line, Tomer, which debuted on March 30 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Gender said the set design of classic sci-fi films influenced his Fall 2004 collection, aptly titled “Metropolis.”

The designer used wool, leather and high-tech fabrics such as neoprene and Kevlar for the collection, which includes rain-resistant wool pants and jackets. “It’s a metro-meets-utilitarian collection,” Gender said.

A black wool turtleneck worn with black wool pants, a three-button gray striped wool suit worn over a white cotton check-box button-up shirt and a black silk crepe kimono robe paired with silk “doctor” pants were a few sleek looks on the runway. Details such as X-suspenders, high-tech belts and laser-cut wool ties gave the line an architectural feel. —C.F.
