L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Heatherette

“Dazzling” and “Fellini-esque” describe the Heatherette show, held on April 1 at a television production building in Culver City.

“The ’look at me’ factor is there,” said Richie Rich, who co-designed the New York–based clubwear line with Traver Rains. “It’s like a kaleidoscope of colors. It’s for the pop star in everybody. It’s not for the weak at heart.”

Rich and Rains dubbed the show “The Circus Comes to Town,” and neon tiger prints on silk chiffon and synthetic satin were big themes in the collection. The material showed up on everything from Rains’ Western-style shirt to mini-dresses. Other themes ranged from brilliantly colored gowns and mini-dresses covered in ostrich feathers to a big top–inspired black-and-pink harlequin pantsuit.

Some pieces broke away from the proverbial three-ring circus. There was a stunning metallic poly-silk gown, a witty red Chineseinspired pantsuit and a sexy 1950s-inspired black polka-dot dress with a dangerously low neckline.

“We want to get in more stores,” Rich said. “But we don’t want to get away from our vision; we’re mixing the one-off dress with the wearable jeans, T-shirts and slip dresses.” —Andrew Asch
