L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Sew Down

Los Angeles designer and impresario Atousa Ghanizadeh and more than 15 other designers showed off the city’s independent spirit at the wild, elegant and playfully avant-garde Sew Down runway show, held on April 4 at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Hollywood.

“I put the spotlight on people who never get attention,” Ghanizadeh said. “They have so much energy.”

A saucy revision of classic fashions was an obsession for many of the new designers. Long Beach, Calif.–based Polka- Dot Starfish put a punk spin on 1940s-inspired bathing suits. Los Angeles–based Army Pink embroidered a child’s drawing of a tank near the hem of classic 1950s-style skirts.

Los Angeles–based We Are Lucid Dreaming took fashion deconstruction to a new level. Designer Trang Chau transformed men’s dress shirts and suits into women’s miniskirt suits that emphasized movement. Vents were placed on suit backs and elbows and were often covered by materials such as vinyl.

These independents also put their stamp on better contemporary apparel. A green knit poodle miniskirt suit by Adrianni was a favorite. Ghanizadeh’s line, Atousa, featured elegant black skirts and lace tops. —A.A.
