L.A. Fashion Week Fall '04: Sterling Capricio

Los Angeles designer Sterling Capricio capped off Los Angeles Fashion Week with an April 4 runway show and open house at his new retail store and design studio on La Brea Avenue.

Capricio opened the lavender-painted store and studio six months ago.

On the night of the show, the designer and models prepared while guests mingled on the patio, viewing a series of draped dresses and layered sportswear ensembles displayed on mannequins.

The designer opened the show with a group of caramel knit dresses with jagged hems, fringed edges, and artfully placed tucks and ruching. He then introduced a series of heather-gray knits paired with leather. One dramatic dress featured an inset leather corset detail. Others were topped with perforated leather capes with jagged edges. For the finale, the designer mixed colors for a dramatic effect. He topped wrapped, layered and draped satin dresses with intricate felt swing coats with zippers and inset obis. The sheen of the cherry, hot-pink, chartreuse and tangerine satin mixed well with the coats’ matte aubergine, lavender and claret shades.

The look was “Mata Hari meets Genghis Khan,” said the designer, who used cashmere, melton and a viscose/wool blend in the collection. —Alison A. Nieder
