The motto for the Gerry Building’s newest tenants might as well be “Think Pink.” Nikki Young and Lucy Thompson opened the Nikki & Lucy Showroom on July 30 and painted the 2,400-square-foot space a bubblegum pink. It’s the same shade as their previous showroom in the California Market Center.

“Our whole philosophy is trend at a price,” Young said. “We’re at the low end of the contemporary stores and at the higher end of the junior chains.”

The bubblegum-pink color reflects the bright fashions and good humor of the six lines Young and Thompson represent, which include David and Goliath, a cartoon character–driven juniors line based in Clearwater, Fla., and the art-driven Itsus of Toronto.

The streetwear-influenced bottoms of Kitsch, the fashion-driven tees of Roxywear, and the funky, reconstructed vintage clothing of Super Lucky Cat are the Los Angeles fashions carried by the showroom. Wholesale price points range from $10 to $29.

Young said she and Thompson moved from the eighth floor of the CMC because they felt the Gerry Building was a better fit for their juniors and contemporary casual angle.

Young is a veteran of downtown Los Angeles’ showroom scene. She worked for Rep Et Trois, Joe’s & N.C. Love (now Joe’s Jeans) and Darlene’s Alley before starting her own showroom in 1996.

Thompson, who started out as an employee at the showroom, became part of the boss’s family soon after she went on a blind date with one of Young’s cousins. After wedding bells rang in 2002, Thompson became a partner.

Taste in color schemes seems to be shared by the entire family.

“Pink is a symbol of happiness,” Young said.

Thompson added, “It’s the pink happy showroom with the girly clothes.” —Andrew Asch
