Cal State, L.A. Kicks Off Textile Program

California State University, Los Angeles is looking for future textile executives.

Professors and administrators from CSULA’s fashion and textiles department spread the word about the school’s new textile design and management certificate program on Dec. 2 at the Windows Steak & Martini restaurant in downtown Los Angeles.

The program will feature classes such as “Fibers, Yarns and Fabrics,” “Textile Quality Control,” “Fabric Finishing,” Textile Dyeing and Color Analysis” and “Plant Management.”

Ilse Metchek, executive director of the California Fashion Association, will teach the first class, “Introduction to the Los Angeles Textile and Apparel Industry.”

The evening classes, which will begin in January, will be held at The New Mart and various textile plants in downtown Los Angeles.

Several instructors and members of the advisory board attended the event, including Metchek; Cassandra Durant-Hamm, formerly with Cotton Inc.; Kathlyn Swantko, creator of FabricLink (www.fabriclink.com) and The Technical Center (www.thetechnicalcenter.com); Victor Kim of Cherish International; Annabella Morency of American Apparel; and Sion Shamian of Shamrod. Each course costs $125. To qualify for a certificate in textile production management, applicants must take five required courses and four elective courses.
