Fighting E-Fraud

Online retailers are boosting their spending on anti-fraud measures, according to a study released by the Merchants Risk Council. The study found that 17 percent of e-tailers boosted their spending on antifraud measures by at least 2 percent in 2003. Online retailers have also seen a decline in credit card charge-backs, the study found. Among the more than 200 e-tailers polled, 9.7 percent reported a charge-back rate of more than 1 percent in 2003. The year prior, 18 percent of e-tailers had reported a charge-back rate of more than 1 percent. And 64 percent of the e-tailers surveyed reported a charge-back rate of less than 0.35 percent, compared with 48 percent the year before.
