CDG's Historic Archive

The Costume Designers Guild has donated its collection of historic costume sketches to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library. The CDG has been compiling the collection of more than 600 sketches since the organization’s beginnings in 1953. The collection includes costume sketches from Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 classic “The Great Dictator” as well as sketches from Edith Head, Orry-Kelly and Jean Louis. Some of the classic film costumes represented include those of the Joan Crawford films “Humoresque” and “Johnny Guitar,” Shirley MacLaine’s costumes in “Sweet Charity,” Julie Andrews’ costumes in “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and Kirk Douglas’ costume in “Spartacus.” Some of the more current sketches include Julie Weiss’ designs for “American Beauty” and “Twelve Monkeys,” Judianna Makovsky’s designs for “Pleasantville,” and Albert Wolsky’s designs for “Galaxy Quest.” The sketches will be archived in the Academy’s new graphic arts vault at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study in Los Angeles.
