FIG to Honor Marine and Charney

The Fashion Industries Guild will honor JEM Sportswear President Jeff Marine and American Apparel Senior Partner Dov Charney at the organization’s 48th annual dinner and awards ceremony on Oct. 2 at The Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The event will benefit the child neurology and neurodevelopment program in the Ruth Bregman Pediatric AIDS Outpatient Clinic at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

JEM Sportswear is the parent company of Awake, a womenswear line, and Chica, a juniors apparel line inspired by Latin culture. The Los Angeles–based company also produces private-label apparel for major retail department store chains—including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Sears, Roebuck and Co., the J.C. Penney Co. Inc. and the Target Corp.—as well as licensed apparel for The Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Entertainment, Mattel Inc., the Sony Corp. and Universal Sutdios.

Marine serves as president of JEM Sportswear, which his father, Earl, founded in 1971. Marine is an active member of the apparel community, having served as a board member for organizations such as South West Apparel and Textile Manufacturers, the MAGIC International trade show, the Los Angeles chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization and the Heschel Day School. He has also been involved in charitable organizations, including the Concern Foundation, City of Hope, The Executives support group of the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging and The Jewish Federation.

American Apparel co-founder Dov Charney is being recognized this year for his humanitarian initiatives in the workplace— including affordable healthcare for the company’s employees and their families, immigration support, English-as-asecond- language courses, computer education, and subsidized lunches and bus passes—and for his commitment to paying a decent wage to his employees.

“Marine and Charney go above and beyond their work,” said FIG President Kenny Weinbaum. “They want to contribute to society in ways that go beyond their manufacturing abilities.”

FIG hopes to raise approximately $1 million in ticket sales, donations and ad journal sales, Weinbaum said. Founded in 1956, FIG is a charitable association of apparel industry professionals who work to raise funds for special programs at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. FIG has raised almost $20 million through its annual dinner events.
