Avery Enters Tagless Label Business

The Avery Dennison Corp.’s Westlake Village, Calif.–based retail information services division has entered the tagless label business with the introduction of ComfortTag, a heat-transfer label that eliminates the need for traditional cloth labels.

The labels, which can contain sizing and care instructions, are applied with a heat press to the back of garments. They have become popular because they eliminate the potential problems of traditional labels.

The company will roll out the system in three stages. The first phase, which has already begun, includes the actual preprinted film-like labels. The second phase, set for the third quarter, will introduce imprinting capabilities that will allow manufacturers to customize labeling. The third phase, set for the fourth quarter, will feature products designed to enhance security and prevent counterfeiting. The company will also introduce a product that erases misapplied heat-transfer labels.
