Surf's Up, Kitty

Hello Kitty is going to the beach. Japan-based Sanrio’s cherubic cat character will celebrate its 30th anniversary at the Hello Kitty Boardfest, set for Oct. 15–17 at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach. The women’s professional surf competition will include surf clinics, skateboard demos and family-friendly games and activities. Lisa Loeb will be among the musicians performing at the event. The Hello Kitty Boardfest will raise funds for UNICEF’s “School-in-a-Box” initiative, which sends mobile classrooms with room for up to 80 students to communities in need. Each classroom includes a teacher’s guide, school supplies and teaching materials. Sanrio’s U.S. headquarters are in San Francisco.
