Jobs Grow Soft

The latest California employment figures aren’t exactly rosy. There was only a net gain of 4,900 jobs in September, according to the state Employment Development Department. This follows a net gain of 4,300 jobs in August and a net loss of 9,300 jobs in July. The state’s unemployment figure in September remained steady at 5.9 percent, the same as the revised August figure but down 6.7 percent from September 2003. The lackluster job gains are a sharp contrast from earlier this year, when a net 89,500 jobs were added between March and June.
