Pulse: Trends for Spring 2005

With the move of WWDMAGIC to the Las Vegas Convention Center, this year’s contemporary fashion show combined the sass of womenswear with the pizzazz of menswear.

The PULSE: Men’s and Women’s Trend Collections Spring 2005 fashion show, held in the Grand Lobby of the convention center, offered buyers the opportunity to see key trends for the season.

The show, which ran twice daily throughout MAGIC International’s Aug. 30–Sept. 2 run in Las Vegas, highlighted five trends: Hampton Classics, Multiplicity, Spice Market, Retro Romance and Rockabilly.

East Coast looks came to the West Coast for Spring in the Hampton Classics showcase. The trend category included preppy looks and updated golf and tennis styles in pastel colors and clean white combinations. Floralprint blazers, argyle capri pants, twin sets, tennis skirts and dresses were strong fashions for women, and polo shirts, V-neck sweaters and plaid pants were key items for men.

Multiplicity featured sweet and sassy looks for girls and colorful Miami Beach–inspired looks for guys. Boho baby-doll tops and graffiti tees were paired with capris, tiered minis and long net skirts. For men, colorful printed tops were coupled with jeans, white slacks and striped pants for a refined, yet relaxed look.

Spice Market included casual styles in a spicy palette of orange, olive, brown and stone. For women, the look included ruffled tops, khakis, utility jackets and cargo pants. Suede jackets, tie-dyed shirts, V-neck sweaters and striped pants were among the men’s styles.

The fascination with vintage continues into Spring with Retro Romance. Dresses, blazers, circle skirts and capri pants in floral prints, polka dots and feminine eyelet fabrics were the looks for women. Men dressed up in modern beige linen and powder-blue suits with printed shirts and ties.

The show’s finale featured Rockabilly styles, including bra tops, logo T-shirts and Western-inspired shirts mixed with denim minis and destroyed-denim jeans for women. The look for men was tough, with sleeveless button-down shirts, updated Western-style shirts and pin-up girl tees paired with destroyed jeans. Cowboy hats and boots suitable for two-stepping completed the look. —N. Jayne Seward
