Mexican Standoff
The Mexican government took control over Mexican border town and customs entry point Nuevo Laredo on June 13, in an effort to curb the town’s recent deadly crime wave and wrest control from drug traffickers, according to cable news service CNN, which reported that 45 people have been killed in drug-related disputes this year. The Mexican government sent troops and federal police to Nuevo Laredo after a skirmish between federal agents and the town’s police broke out on June 11. Nuevo Laredo, which sits across the Rio Grande from Laredo, Texas, is one of the major customs entry points for imports to the United States.
