Star Wars Costumes Come to FIDM

The costumes from a galaxy far, far away will be heading to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s Museum & Galleries in downtown Los Angeles.

More than 100 original costumes, sketches and printed materials from the six “Star Wars” films produced by Nicasio, Calif.–based Lucasfilm Ltd. will be on display Sept. 12–Dec. 10. The exhibit, titled “Dressing a Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars,” will highlight the designs of Trisha Biggar and mark the conclusion of the six-part series. The final film, “Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith,” was released on May 19.

FIDM’s Museum & Galleries said this is the first time the costumes from “Star Wars” will be shown in an exhibit.

One of Biggar’s creations was the Shiraya fan headdress worn by Natalie Portman in character as Queen Amidala. Accented with gold, silver and strands of pearls, the headdress adds sobriety to the Japanese kimono–inspired slate-gray and brown robes that are cinched with a wide white sash.

The Museum & Galleries occupies 10,000 square feet and features three galleries. The exhibit will be free to the public. For more information, visit www.fidm.org. —Khanh T.L. Tran
