Paper Does L.A.

New York–based Paper magazine is taking its show on the road.

Dec. 7–11, the magazine staff plans to invade Los Angeles for the first “Los Angeles Paper Project.” The magazine will set up camp at the Acme Gallery for a weeklong extravaganza of music, art and fashion events, which will be featured in the February 2006 issue of Paper.

Kim Hastreiter, co-publisher and co-editor- in-chief of the magazine, said that the project would be a melting pot of selected New York imports and talent from all around the Los Angeles area. “We find that in L.A., all the streetwear people hang out all together and all the high-fashion people hang out all together, [but] people don’t mix as much as they do in New York,” Hastreiter said. “One of our goals was to cover a lot of different types of talent and then mix it all up.”

Confirmed participants in the fashion presentations as of the California Apparel News deadline included Los Angeles–based Jeremy Scott, Henry Duarte, Rosasen, Ashley Paige, Rodarte, Bettina Hubby and Show Pony and New York–based Kembra Phaler and Heatherette. Hastreiter said that the designers were encouraged to find “creative ways of showing a collection.”

Music performances, art exhibits and activities are planned for the Acme Gallery event, and visitors can participate or just observe. Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be delivered in the morning before “Personality Aerobics,” led by drag queens and other talents. Photo shoots of different Los Angeles “tribes,” such as female wrestlers and socialites, are intended to foster the mingling of different social circles.

David Hershkovits, co-publisher and coeditor- in-chief, sums up the project as “live culture and creating culture” that will introduce New York to Los Angeles and vice versa.
