Art Institute of San Diego Adds Fashion Program

The Art Institute of San Diego this summer will introduce two fashion programs offering bachelor’s degrees in fashion design and fashion marketing.

The private school, which also operates California Design College in Los Angeles, has received accreditation status from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology to offer bachelor’s of fine arts and bachelor’s of science degrees.

The school, which is located in Mission Valley, will be the first in San Diego County to offer an accredited four-year degree.

The move was made in part to supply the growing base of apparel companies in San Diego with leading talent. The area is home to large surfwear and golf brands.

Art Institute officials, citing data from the U.S. Department of Labor, said that two-thirds of salaried fashion designers were employed in New York or California, where competition is fierce and standards for entry are getting higher. Many employers require two- or fouryear degrees.
