Miami Runway Report: Xtra Life Lycra
Lycra, the fabric that helped revolutionize swimwear, celebrated the 60th anniversary of the bikini with a fashion show in Miami Beach. Lycra parent company Invista presented the show to tout its latest innovation: Xtra Life Lycra.
On July 15, more than 30 designers presented their 2007 collections utilizing the new fabric. As a part of its consumer launch this year, Xtra Life Lycra partnered with Assouline Publishing to create “The Bikini Book,” and its author and Elle Accessories Editor Kelly Killoren Bensimon hosted the show. The 400-page book served as inspiration for the show, which included swimwear reminiscent of Hollywood and the stars that helped popularize the bikini.
“It was a great time for us to be able to have our fashion show here to celebrate the anniversary of the bikini,” said Dianne W. Lober, Invista’s marketing communications manager. The fabric, which made its debut to consumers this summer, helps swimwear keep its original size and shape. “Consumers really want a bathing suit that not only fits but retains its fit,” added Lober.
Designers included Red Carter, La Perla Beachwear, Betsey Johnson, Sauvage, Agua de Coco, Anne Cole, Carmen Marc Valvo, Juicy Couture Beach, Salinas, Radio Fiji, Poko Pano, Speedo, Shan, Maryan Mehlhorn, Michael Kors Collection, Lucky Brand, Becca and DKNY–Donna Karan New York. —N. Jayne Seward
