Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: David Tupaz

For his Fall/Winter collection, Los Angeles designer David Tupaz reflected back to the dawn of commercial aviation when getting dressed up to fly was de rigueur.

His interpretation, shown at a March 19 presentation at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, materialized in a collection of sleek suitings, geometric-cut dresses and versatile body scarves.

The Philippines-born designer, who moved to Los Angeles about 10 years ago, showed a variety of looks from the more casual and comfortable to outright glamorous. To spice up the glam element, Tupaz invited famous Hollywood wives Tonya Thicke, Cris Jenner, Tracy Hamilton and Elizabeth Shatner to hit the catwalk.

They wore dresses and gowns in vivid black and white striping as well as long matte jersey dresses in black and gray.

Other looks included matte jersey sweat suits, which were dolled up with a body scarf that opens up and can be used as a turtleneck, hoodie, shrug, cowl or poncho.

Tupaz sprayed black and grayish stretch viscose with “moondust” sparkle, which was highlighted on a series of skirts, bustiers and jackets. In another unique treatment, he used denim, which was platinum glazed and given a silver sheen finish for both his men’s and women’s collections.

To cover it all up, Tupaz offered a range of geometric trench coats and dusters. —Robert McAllister
