Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Ya-Ya

Designer Yael Aflalo went for a clean look with classic shapes for her Fall ’06 collection seen March 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.

Cropped slacks with cuffs, long sweater coats, double-breasted twill coats and riding pants were some of the looks that Aflalo integrated into her show.

“Fashion has been more ethnic and eccentric, and I really wanted to clean it up,” said the 20-something designer who launched her sportswear collection four years ago.

There was a country feel to the collection as models often paraded down the runway wearing riding boots, whether they were wearing skirts, dresses or pants. The collection’s color scheme drew its hues from menswear with ample doses of gray, brown, black and camel. Special details lent a distinctive flair to the clothes. Riding pants had leather details in black, trench coats had knife pleats in the back, blouses had v-necks with ribbon details in silver.

Ya-Ya is known for its trousers that have a longer, leaner look popular among several celebrities. Actress Carmen Electra, who was in the audience, said she is a Ya-Ya fan because the clothes fit her petite 5-foot-3-inch frame. “I used to wear clothes to be sexy,” she said. “Now I’m more into fashion.” —Deborah Belgum
