Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Buffalo David Bitton

For the second straight time, Canadian label Buffalo David Bitton traveled south of the border to show its collection March 21 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.

The casual wear company, best known for its form-fitting blue jeans, presented 48 looks that went well beyond its denim trademark.

Buffalo founder David Bitton, born in Morocco but raised in Montreal, started out as a sweater designer before venturing into the world of blue jeans. He is now positioning his 21-year-old company to have a larger presence in the United States. The firm owns 40 stores in Canada.

For Fall, Bitton revisited his sweater roots with several creations for both men and women that provided a fresh look on the runway. Particularly fetching for women was a sleeveless, autumn-colored sweater paired with an off-the-shoulder thermal tee. For men, sweaters came in wide-block stripes, argyle and tattoo prints.

Women’s pants were cropped or had pencil-thin silhouettes. Shrugs were mixed into the line and were worn with diaphanous or knit tops. Jackets were strong for men and women. Women’s jackets were nipped at the waist, accenting feminine figures. Men’s jackets were rugged.

The whole collection had a certain European boho feel that simultaneously evoked comfort and stylishness. —Deborah Belgum
