Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '06: Voom by Joy Han

Designer Joy Han managed to mix the styles of the 1920s with the 1970s, and the results were on display March 22 when she bowed her Fall ’06 collection for her Voom label at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. The show marked Voom’s first time on the Smashbox runway—the label is a relative newcomer to the wholesale side of the business.

Han produced Voom for her West Los Angeles retail store, but then added a wholesale arm to the business when she partnered with Los Angeles-based dress label Mica in ’04. When Mica shuttered last August, Han returned to her solo operation, but this time as a retailer and wholesaler.

For Fall ’06, Han showed playful wrap dresses topped with berets. Other looks had more of a flapper feel, with mini dresses accessorized by bows and big chains. Han’s 1970s looks focused on street-smart, yet brightly colored leather jackets and calf-length gowns. But it wasn’t all ’20s femininity and ’70s chic. Han also included baby-doll tops in bright prints. —Andrew Asch
