City of Hope Gala to Honor Clareman, Kim

The Apparel Industries Group for the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, Calif., on June 10 will present its Spirit of Life award to Richard Clareman, president of Los Angeles–based junior apparel manufacturer Self Esteem, and Sunnie Kim, president and chief executive officer of Hana Financial Inc. in Los Angeles.

“We are proud to honor the extraordinary accomplishments of Richard and Sunnie and recognize their unwavering commitment to their profession and City of Hope,” said Crystal Zarpas, board president of the City of Hope’s Apparel Industries Group.

Clareman, who helped to raise $800,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, was recognized by the guild as Man of the Year in 2002.

Kim, Hana’s co-founder, serves as a director of the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles and sits on the board of the Asian Business Association.

“Their outstanding dedication to public service and philanthropy truly embodies the principles of compassion and caring on which the City of Hope was founded,” Zarpas said.

The Apparel Industries Group will honor the pair at its annual benefit gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Last year’s event raised more than $1 million for the City of Hope’s research, treatment and education programs.

Physicians and scientists at the City of Hope seek to find causes and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS.
