BNY's Independence Party

When Gregory Niebel opened boutique BNY more than 15 years ago, he wanted to make a statement with fashion—and earn a profit.

Niebel established a focus on fashion designers from Japan, and hasn’t looked back.

His only change may be going out to party more. And on May 11 he co-hosted his first charity fund-raiser with actress Laura San Giacomo, pictured at above.

The event was for the Chime Institute, a think tank based in Northridge, Calif. More than 300 guests milled about designs of Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Kiminori Morishita and Hussein Chalayan.

Niebel said fashion-forward Japanese design fits in well with California’s focus on jeans.

“I don’t claim to be conservative,” he said. “This store stands on its own.” —Andrew Asch
