Networking With Local Designers
Designers always seem to be at the center of attention. However, designer Miguel Torres believed that there was no place for fashion’s creative people to share the latest gossip or provide support in what can often be a tough industry.
So the 34-year-old designer started producing a monthly mixer party for fashion designers in August. It’s scheduled for the third Saturday of each month and takes place at the Miguel Torres Design Studio in downtown Los Angeles. Torres said the mixers are already a burgeoning success. More than 40 people drank wine and traded information at the October mixer. He’s expecting more than 100 for the party coming up on Nov. 18.
“When I started, nobody helped me. I didn’t know where to find photographers or makeup artists,” Torres said. He hopes that designers can start offering professional help to each other starting with these networking parties.
The design community in Los Angeles has few outlets for professional networking.
Fashion Group International–Los Angeles has been hosting a monthly cocktail party that draws a crowd from all walks of fashion life. The Coalition of Los Angeles Fashion Designers was founded in 1998 to provide a place for designers to exchange ideas and resources, and it soon evolved to include marketing and social activities. Although still extant, the nonprofit organization is currently dormant.
“It’s against the grain,” said Marco Morante, designer of the Los Angeles–based Marco Marco label. “Los Angeles has its nose turned up against schmoozing, even though we’re all schmoozers.”
Torres’ designs, such as a convertible wrap dress, have been sold at boutiques such as LF and Bohemian Butterfly in South Pasadena, Calif. Torres recommends bringing portfolios and business cards to the mixers.
Miguel Torres Design Studio mixers are scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. the third Saturday of each month at 846 S. Broadway, suite 802, Los Angeles, 90014. For more information, call (213) 891-1263. The cost is $5 at the door for hors d’oeuvres and wine. —Andrew Asch
