Gap Abroad

San Francisco–based retail giant Gap Inc. has expanded an existing distribution agreement for Gap and Banana Republic clothing and accessories in Southeast Asia. The deal is with Indonesian company FJ Benjamin, which announced intentions to open about 20 retail stores by 2010. The Gap first began working with FJ Benjamin earlier this year when the company landed exclusive franchise rights for Gap and Banana Republic stores in Malaysia and Singapore. An FJ Benjamin subsidiary will open three Gap stores in Singapore and five Gap stores in Malaysia before the end of the year and expects to open Banana Republic stores in Singapore and Malaysia next year. In the past year Gap Inc. has signed franchise agreements for the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.
