L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Shay Todd

Shay Todd saw a spike in sales after celebrities Eva Longoria and Paris Hilton wore the designer’s swimsuits at an awards show and in a controversial fast-food commercial, respectively.

On Oct. 16 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif., the Los Angeles–based designer delivered beyond the buzz with a “glamorized nautical”–themed collection that was chic and wearable.

“The concept of the line is really about dressing someone on their holiday from beginning to end,” Todd said.

Though the line’s foundation is swimwear, dresses and jackets that translate outside of the tropical vacation setting proved that Todd’s design talent reaches beyond bikinis and beach coverups. A short navy silk tunic and cropped navy pea coat showed tailored refinement while still retaining a casual breeze.

Todd’s staple triangle bikinis and cutout one-piece swimsuits came in a summery shell print and in sophisticated nautical hues of pure red, matte white and deep navy.

Sprinkled throughout the show were flashes of glam in Lurex knit shorts, shimmering gold bikinis, metallic fanny packs and a perfect oversize beach tote embellished with shiny gold studs. —Rhea Cortado
