L.A. Fashion Week Spring '07: Kevan Hall

Known for his stellar evening gowns, Kevan Hall didn’t disappoint at his Oct. 19 runway show, which closed the shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. The former designer and creative director for Halston packed the house with a star-studded audience that included Angela Bassett, Vanessa Williams and Virginia Madsen. Grammy Award–winning artist Jody Watley opened the show by singing a re-imagined version of “Aquarius”—the perfect prequel to Hall’s “From Dusk Till Dawn” collection. Inspired by the heavens, the colors of the sky formed the palette in sunset orange, dawn, mist and dark midnight as well as day-to-night shades of black and white. Sophisticated tailored looks featured Hall’s signature clean, classic lines, which were dramatized with luxurious fabrications.

Gowns flowed effortlessly down the runway in silk chiffon, silk jersey and pleated taffeta. Hall’s classic look included mature pieces such as the high waists on shorts and sequin pants paired with button-down shirts and cropped trench coats. And he added a younger edge to styles such as a sequin mini dress in “Star Gazer” silver and a strapless bubble dress with twisted black tulle. But the show-stopper was a midnight-blue taffeta pleated bustier gown, which was crafted with perfection. —N. Jayne Seward
