Paper Returns to L.A., Searches for Fashion Talent

When New York–based Paper magazine returns to Los Angeles for the week of Nov. 7–12, Editor and Publisher Kim Hastreiter wants to see what local creative types have to offer. Paper will host a bevy of events, including fashion shows, art exhibits, concerts, hair wars, store openings, discussion panels and an open call for people in creative fields including fashion, beauty and the arts from its headquarters at 5500 Hollywood Blvd.

Capping off the six-day event will be a talent search for young and up-and-coming designers. From noon to 5 p.m. on Nov. 12, Hastreiter, Paper’s fashion editors, and stylist and special guest judges (including designers Jeremy Scott and sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte) will review work from local designers. “Come and inspire me, blow my mind,” Hastreiter said.

The panel, which will hold court in Paper’s Fashion Mobile RV outside the Hollywood Boulevard location, is looking for inspiration and young stars to champion. “It is a way to look at the work of designers who don’t have many outlets,” Hastreiter said. Some designers may even end up in the magazine, she added. “Paper is about finding stars that are a little rough around the edges.”

The Fashion Mobile has helped to launch the careers of many notable designers, Hastreiter said. “The first time I met Jeremy [Scott] was on the Fashion Mobile. He came in before he went to Paris to work for Gaultier,” she said. Designer Doo-Ri Chung, winner of the 2006 Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry EllisWomenswear Award, was also discovered on the Fashion Mobile and hired on the spot by designer Geoffrey Beene. This will be the first time the Fashion Mobile has come to Los Angeles.

An open call for photographers, graphic designers, hair stylists, makeup artists and stylists will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 inside Paper’s temporary headquarters. James Gager, creative director of MAC Cosmetics, will be leading the search for potential new makeup artists for his company. —Erin Barajas
