Labor Commissioners, GCA Highlight Key Issues for Contractors

Labor issues topped the agenda at a March 22 meeting hosted by the Garment Contractors Association of Southern California and the Economic & Employment Enforcement Coalition.

Bob Jones, California’s acting labor commissioner, Deputy Labor Commissioner Eduardo Martinez, and David Dorame, the EEEC’s director, and others addressed the approximately 20 employers who gathered for the three-hour seminar, presented by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, Cal OSHA, the state’s Employment Development Department and the United States Wage and Hour Division.

Covering topics from joint liability and itemized-deduction statements to workplace frequently identified hazards and how to identify independent contractors, the seminar touched on wide array of employer concerns.

Martinez urged employers to maintain fastidious records and remain up-to-date on their manufacturer’s registration and worker’s compensation insurance requirements. Another key point, which was reiterated by several speakers, was the illegality of retaliating in any way against employees who speak to workplace inspectors.
