Securing the Ports

Construction on the Port of Long Beach’s $20 million Command and Control Center broke ground on April 3. The new center, conceived as part of the port’s post–9/11 security efforts, will house communications and port security headquarters, as well as serve as a center for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Marine Exchange in the event of an emergency. Funding for the project is provided by the Port of Long Beach and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which contributed $8.1 million toward the total cost. The center is scheduled to open in fall 2008.
