Knitting With Attitude
Singer, bass player, knitter. It’s an unusual career trajectory.
Share Ross is currently the guitarist for indie rock band Bubble and the former bassist of EMI recording artists Vixen.
Ross turned out to meet students and sign copies of her book, “Punk Knits: 26 Hot New Designs for Anarchistic Souls and Independent Spirits,” at the FIDM Museum Shop at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.
Published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang, the book includes easy-to-follow instructions and photos of genuine rockers wearing Ross’ styles. Patterns are labeled from beginning (“garage” and “coffee house”) to advanced (“nightclub,” “theater” and “arena”). Styles include the Janis Joplin–inspired “Kozmic Kami,” the Blondie-inspired “Bombshell Skirt” and the New York Dolls–inspired “New York Dolly”: a long cardigan vest.
The book has instructions for accessories, including The Clash–inspired “London’s Burning Strap,” which is strong enough to support the weight of an electric guitar, as well as gauntlets, arm warmers, scarves and hats. —Alison A. Nieder
