San Francisco Fashion Week '07: Vian Hunter

Designer Lisa Hunter took everyone on a journey to the late 1950s and 1960s with her very ladylike designs, which evoked a certain “women who like to lunch” feeling.

On the runway were a silk pink suit, a backless seersucker dress, a French jacquard print dress with a matching coat and cocktail dresses with brocade overskirts. A first for Hunter were evening gowns, such as a cranberry-red silk velvet gown with a long train and an airy navy silk charmeuse gown with a silk organza overlay.

“It’s ladylike dressing and classic looks and nothing that is going to go out of style,” said Hunter, who waited 20 years to attend the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in San Francisco. Since 2003, she has been custom designing clothes for Bay area clients. Last year, she launched her line and a new store in Palo Alto, Calif., where she lives. —Deborah Belgum
