TJX Cos. Inc., which operates off-price chains TJ Maxx and Ross Dress for Less, reported that a hacker had gained access to the company’s system and stole account information from its customers for more than a year. TJX President Carol Meyrowitz issued a statement saying customers should feel safe about any of the company’s stores, as it has more than 50 information-technology and other workers securing the system. After further investigation, the retailer determined that the hacker broke into the system as early as July 2005, almost one year from previous estimates of May 2006. Security officials told the retailer they believe there were no compromises of data following mid-December 2006.
