Signorelli: Anything but Denim

Working in the entertainment industry turned Meredith Garrett against denim. “I was working at New Line Cinema, and the entertainment industry is super-casual. I just got so sick of wearing jeans and T-shirts every day— but the last thing I wanted to do was wear a suit,” she laughed. Garrett, who studied business at the University of San Diego, had no formal training in fashion but said she felt spurred to launch her contemporary line, Signorelli, by a lack of casual but sophisticated clothing for women in her situation.

Launched for Spring 2006, the Signorelli line is made up of casual separates and suiting pieces, including shorts in a variety of lengths, trousers, vests, blazers, woven tops and embellished T-shirts. Though there is no denim to be found in the line, Garrett said her inspiration for her bottoms is “a mix between a dressy trouser—like a Theory trouser— and a pair of jeans.” In fact, some of her pin-striped trousers are washed in denim washes, so they have the look of jeans and the lightweight and tailored feel of a suiting piece.

Signorelli’s bottoms wholesale from $71 to $95 for shorts, Bermuda shorts and trousers; vests start at $71; blazers wholesale for upwards of $135; and casual tops range from $31 to $45, with fashion tops and tunics hovering around $71. Vintage buttons, subtle screen prints and body-conscious silhouettes keep Signorelli feeling young. The line, which sells at Ron Herman at Fred Segal Melrose and Yellow Dog in Los Angeles and at Atrium in New York, will add woven dresses for Fall 2007. For more information, call (310) 895-3744.
