Red Carter Swim Spring '08

Red Carter, Miami’s poster boy for swimwear, showed his collection on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim for the third consecutive season on July 12. Carter is always inspired by Miami’s diverse cultures to design his swimwear. “I’m so inspired by this place,” said Carter. “It’s such a great platform for me. I’m so happy to be working here,” he added. Carter said he wanted to show vignettes of fashion to illustrate all of the ideas in his new collection. “I think that we tried to show some character with all the product,” he said of his collection, which included models who walked the runway wearing black bobbed synthetic wigs. “We wanted them to look like mannequins—sort of like the epitome of beauty,” said Carter. The show included wearable safari-inspired swimwear with animal prints, cargo-pocket details and Native American designs. Carter then switched gears to throw people for a loop with a burlesque group that included black-and-white tuxedo-inspired styles. He followed up with a high-tech “Video Killed the Radio Star” finale to show the high-gloss, high-glam look of Miami. The group had a 1980s, electro-clash feel with color blocking, eclectic patterns and high-voltage color. “We tried to show how you could take a color palette and blow it up in different ways to show the fast energy. It was really fast with the solids and the color blocking and the athletic vibe. That’s what Miami’s about, which is fast, fabulous fashion,” said Carter. —N. Jayne Seward
