L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: BOXeight

The baroque opulence of the historic Los Angeles Theater provided the backdrop for new alternate fashion week BOXeight, which debuted with a group show on March 16 that featured a mix of avant-garde fashion and accessories designers and artists.

Looks on the runway ranged from architectural and modern styles including Unhee by Suzie Yun’s racer-back white voile dress with a cummerbund in metallic leather and Kristen Coates’ shredded dress with feather epaulettes. There were tailored pieces, including Kit Pistol by Christina Scarbo’s dress coat in black corduroy with a diagonal ruffle that circumnavigated the body and Stacy Ellen Rich’s hand-articulated men’s suit in silk and wool for her Rock ’n’ Roll Beauty Show collection. Eddie DeBarr’s pinstriped dress combined tailoring and deconstruction with a corset top and ruffled, raw-edged skirt. And Jainesse designer Jaycia Gayle showed her “Leslie” dress in eggplant satin, which featured three-quarter sleeves and a silk-screened hummingbird image on one hip.

More–avant-garde pieces included Goddollars’ beaded necklace top and men’s chest plate, Claire la Faye’s mini crinoline and Adele Mildred’s “cage skirts” made of satin ribbons.Accessories included Posso’s metallic leather spats. —Alison A. Nieder
