L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Corey Lynn Calter

Smart girls ruled at Corey Lynn Calter’s Fall ’07 fashion show, held March 15 at the Marvimon House in downtown Los Angeles. Calter created a complex, intellectual, yet quirky, muse to wear her unique signature prints and 1960s shapes. The style, complete with spectacles, referenced the nerd-chic look that has invaded style circles since the “Ugly Betty” phenomenon, but Calter gave it a Parisian twist. The evening began with an elegant cocktail party where guests sipped champagne and lounged on the outdoor patio before moving to the indoor area of the luxury loft space for the show. On the runway, the designer continued her signature print mixing to illustrate the individual style of her muse. Gray, mustard yellow, black, royal blue and brick red created a dark and moody, yet vibrant, palette. Prints with birds, flowers and constructivist puppets referenced Malevich and Modigliani, adding a lighter feel to the serious look. Printed blouses were layered under bold plaids, and polka dot–print shift dresses and beaded dresses had a Bohemian feel. Chunky-wool coat dresses were layered nicely over lantern-sleeve tops. And the designer’s party frocks are sure to be a hit with Hollywood’s fashion set, including Christina Ricci, Jenna Jameson and Internet “It’ girl Cory Kennedy, all of whom graced the designer’s front row. —N.
