L.A. Fashion Week Fall '07: Ziji

After making its runway debut last season as part of Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion showcase, Los Angeles–based Ziji returned to the runway March 15 as part of Kitten Fashion Week at The Standard Downtown.

Inspired by Mongolia, Ziji’s Fall 2007 collection featured modified mandarin collars and slim silhouettes. “This season is a departure for us. We wanted to get the essence of Mongolia with details and color, but we’re still rooted in Western culture,” said co-designer and architect Katarina Gabbro. “It’s all masculine meets feminine.”

Standout pieces included a bib-front dress, with long sleeves and a slim skirt, and perfectly tailored trousers in a rich chocolate brown. A series of sheer tops in heather, plum and sage tones featured cut-out collars. Dresses ranged from sleeveless shaped with high collars to mod little minis with slash pockets. Ziji’s minimalist offerings got a touch of warmth with chunky knit sweaters and a long double-layer scarf with pockets.—Erin Barajas
