Apparel Customs Chief to Speak in Los Angeles

Current textile investigations and seizures, ghost factories in Asia, identity theft of U.S. firms, and shipments of denim jeans being stopped at numerous U.S. ports will be among the topics discussed when U.S. Customs’ Janet Labuda addresses members of the California Fashion Association.

The customs chief will be the guest speaker at the CFA’s annual general membership meeting on May 9 in downtown Los Angeles.

Labuda, who is the director of textile and apparel enforcement for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington, D.C., will be speaking about the current risks and threats in importing apparel and textiles, how new border-security issues will affect transportation costs and what a company can do to avoid any problems getting goods through customs.

Other topics of discussion by the CFA include the end of safeguard measures on Chinese textiles and the longshore workers’ contract expiring in July 2008.

A question-and-answer period will follow as well as cocktails and a networking reception. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The California Club at 538 S. Flower St.
