Patagonia T-Shirts Raise $99,000 for Oceana

Ventura, Calif.–based outerwear maker Patagonia has given a $99,000 grant to the global conservation group Oceana, which has headquarters in Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; and Anchorage, Alaska.

The proceeds were raised through T-shirt sales conducted through its “Oceans as Wilderness Campaign.” The grant will be used to support Oceana’s efforts to fight pollution and destructive fishing practices. The money will also be spent on working with local and national governments to increase protection and spread awareness about the environment.

Oceana Chief Executive Andy Sharpless said the grant will go far in the organization’s various campaigns.

“Every precious treasure the ocean has to offer is in danger of being lost forever. To sit back and watch them disappear is a crime of humanity. We understand the magnitude of this situation, as does Patagonia,” he said.

Patagonia, whose sales last year totaled $270 million, has been active in various conservation programs. It has an Environmental Grants Program, which has contributed more than $27 million to grassroots environmental activists since 1985. Its Environmental Internship Program allows employees to work for environmental groups while receiving their regular paychecks.
