Directives West: Time to Shine, California

Directives West, a trend forecaster and buying office for retailers, hosted its “Time to Shine, California” fashion show on Oct. 26, featuring contemporary fashion for the Spring 2008 season.

Barbie Lux by Patricia Field kicked off the event, held in the patio of the California Market Center. The line was packed with feminine, Barbie-inspired fashion for real-life dolls and featured pops of bright pink and sassy prints.

Footwear brand Steve Madden also showcased its new dress line in Los Angeles for the first time.

Dresses proved to be a key look for Spring, ranging from floaty mini-dresses and sporty T-shirt dresses to sleek sheaths and floorgrazing maxis.

The continued popularity of dresses pushed designers to get creative with prints and colors. Plaids, polka dots, florals, stripes and mixed prints brought visual interest to dresses. White was a popular color for Spring, as were brights in yellow, blue, green, purple and pink.

Denim continues to be a major player in contemporary fashion, with a new focus on high-waist and wide-leg styles. The new silhouette was joined by darker washes and colored denim versions that felt fresh.

Green fashion got a nod with casual styles from Re:Volve, Blue Life and Zooey. Sworn Virgins created chic dresses in eco-friendly fabrics. —Erin Barajas
