L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Jesse Kamm

Fashion and film merged for the debut of Jesse Kamm’s Spring ’08 collection. The presentation at the Taylor de Cordoba Gallery on Oct. 16 included live models and a showing of “L.A. Bloom,” a fashion film created to complement the collection.

The nine-minute piece was created by Core Studio and featured starlets Alison Lohman and Marley and Samantha Shelton. Kamm said she wanted to think of a creative way to bring her collection to people without taking a lot of their time. “They can have this little piece of art,” she said.

The film was projected onto a wall as models wearing the collection stepped out of 25-gallon planters trimmed with grass. Kamm said she was inspired by antique French notions she found at the flea market in Paris and the idea of springtime when designing the collection.

The video illustrated the theme. A French soundtrack played as dynamic springtime imagery and vignettes flashed across the screen. Girls emerged from blooming flowers, rode bikes through Paris and painted their fingernails. Kamm, who creates her own textiles, made drawings of the beautiful old buttons, toggles and trims she found in Paris and printed them on the clothing. Bold graphic buttons decorated a top paired with a high-waist short, and a large trompe l’oeil silk bow cascaded down the center front of a dress. The collection also took on the shapes of spring. Skirts were shaped like tulips, and a halter dress had a large, voluminous skirt. —N. Jayne Seward
