Interns Fecirc;ted at YMA Scholarship Event

Seven Californians were among the 60 fashion students who landed coveted internships with high-profile fashion companies this summer through the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund. Otis School of Design students Aimee Santos, Sin Yi (Desiree) Ngai, Giselle Limtao, Jennifer Tsai, Phoebe Wang, Sharon Choi and Summer Spanton were awarded summer internships through the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund this year. Santos, for example, spent the summer working at Nike’s men’s department. Limtao interned at Los Angeles design house Thomas Wylde.

The Otis students joined YMA’s other interns at a social for the internship program July 23 in New York.

The nonprofit YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund founded its internship program in 2005. It has steadily grown from 15 students to the current 60 students. On the board of the scholarship fund are companies such as Geoffrey Beene, Victoria’s Secret, Fendi and Kellwood Co., as well as retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target. Students are nominated for internships through their schools before going through an application process to vie for internships at companies such as Nike, Ralph Lauren and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Internship students are awarded $5,000 scholarships. They are also paid an hourly wage by the companies where they intern. YMA also offers four $25,000 Geoffrey Beene scholarships annually.
